Stop

Yes, you – if you’re feeling overwhelmed it might feel like running around getting things done is your only option. But realistically, if you’re feeling rushed, you probably need to rest. Take a quick inventory of the basics – are you getting enough sleep every night? Are you drinking enough water? Is your diet vaguely nutritious? If any of these are off, there’s a chance that you’ve been stressed for longer than you realised.

Switch to survival mode

No, we don’t mean that you need to live off cacti in the desert – just prioritise your physical and mental wellbeing for a moment. Even if it’s just making sure you have a lunch break, or going to the loo exaclt when you need it (instead of just finishing this one email), look out for your wellbeing like you would a loved one’s health.

Talk to people

It’s easy to feel like we have to be positive 100% of the time (otherwise you’re manifesting negativity, right?) but it’s equally important to recognise and accept how you are feeling, or you’d never move out of your comfort zone. These signals are usually signs of something you’re not happy with – whether it’s the mess in your house or your job, feeling overwhelmed is the perfect alarm for you to step back and assess what’s working for you and what isn’t. Talk to your friends about what’s bothering you – if you don’t have many friends to talk to, chat with nearby yogis in class or call the samaritans! Collaboration could be the key to moving on from whatever is worrying you.

Do what you enjoy

When we get busy, hobbies are the first thing to go. Prioritise what you love and everything else will fall into place – if yoga is your jam, do yoga. If you can’t get enough of singing, join a choir. You might feel knackered after a day at work, but doing something you love will in fact energise you.
